The Dallas Mavericks acquired Grant Williams on a sign and trade with Boston this summer. As I remember correctly this was exciting at the time, bringing a locker room presence, and a defensive surrounded player to the Mavericks organization. Boy how times have changed
Grant started the season extremely well, providing 3-point shooting at a high clip, as well as some aggressive and energizing defense on the other end. Along with that, Grant and Luka share an agent, as well as a Jordan Brand sponsorship, so even before being a Mav, Grant was repping Lukas's shoes as a Celtic.
As the season progressed, Grant regressed. His 3-point shooting fell off of a cliff and he started to deal with foul trouble and sloppy defensive possessions amidst the bad offense. So, in Nico Harrison fashion, he made the best move for the team and traded Grant in a deal to acquire PJ Washington from the Hornets. This was yesterday and considerable news has come out about the situation since.
Grant Afseth (Genuinely my favorite Mavericks reporter) Spoke on the issue of him as a locker-room presence near the end of his tenure. Along with this, NBACentral on X quoted, "Notably, he also switched his basketball sneakers from Luka's to Tatum's signature shoes." Someone who switches from his #1 teammate's shoes to another player's shoe in which he previously played is a little skeptical in my opinion.
Grant Williams was a great addition to theory, but oftentimes theory varies from reality, and in this case that is exactly what happened. We can only consider what would have happened if Grant continued to produce like he did at the beginning of the season. MFFLs thank Grant for his short time in Dallas and wish him well in Charlotte.
